Program Outline

Classes for each age group follow a basic routine, with occasional variations. During a class, each group will usually have some free play in the classroom's activity centres, circle time (where the children are introduced to letters, numbers and literature), a snack, a musical activity or group game activity, and – weather permitting – a play outside.

While the program is well thought out, the activities are not highly structured; a child may exercise a degree of choice and may tackle an activity in a way that best suits them.

We also have a variety of themes throughout the school year that captures the interest of the children. Past activities have included changing seasons, colours, life-cycles, celebrations around the world, dinosaurs, space and pets.

Organic snack program

Springhill offers a healthy, organic and nut-free diet for your children, helping to foster healthy eating habits from a young age. Organic foods meet stringent standards, taste great and reduce health risks. Each snack offered consists of three food groups selected from a range of items such as fresh fruit, yogurt, bread and crackers, vegetables and cheese, juice or water or milk.

Music and Dance led by J’Adore Dance

We are excited to announce that Springhill has teamed up with J’Adore Dance to offer both their Kreative Kidz® and Urban Kidz® programming. Kreative Kidz® features a combination of Ballet, Jazz and Creative Movement while Urban Kidz® features a combination of Hip Hop and Creative Movement. Jenna Brenan (studio owner) and Annie Heffer (studio manager) are thrilled to offer movement and dance activities that enhance life-long learning and neural development for our preschoolers. Movement vocabulary and dance concepts will lay the foundation for lifelong physical literacy. Creative movement, imagination and expression are combined with developmentally appropriate movement, music, and dance to create a class that is fun for all! To learn more, visit jadoredance.ca

Parent participation

As a parent-run cooperative, parent involvement is crucial and welcomed. There are many opportunities to be involved, from the regular mandatory volunteer duties, roles on the board, special invitations to our Winter and Spring social events, two cleaning bees, casino, and special year-end family field trips. We also welcome parents to share any expertise that they may have with the class when we are working on an appropriate theme (e.g. musical skills, related occupations, etc.).

Field trips

In addition to the variety of activities and themes in our regular classes, field experiences are planned according to the topic of interest. These field trips are often physical and recreational in nature, allowing the children to engage in hands-on exploration of their environment. The Muttart Conservatory, Royal Alberta Museum, Fringe Theatre, John Janzen Nature Centre, Valley Zoo, Telus World of Science, Edmonton Public Library and Prairie Gardens are a few of the field trips we have attended. All field trip fees at Springhill are included in the tuition, so no additional funds need to be paid to enjoy these wonderful outings.
